Bylaws related to outdoor lights
In Calgary, you can't let outdoor lights shine directly into your neighbour's home.
Fines for violations of these regulations range between $100 and $300.
Helpful tips:
- Ensure that outdoor lighting is directed at your own property and does not shine directly into your neighbours’ properties.
- Use a shade or cut-off fixture to ensure that light is emitted downward.
- Use a diffusing cover or lens on light fixtures (such as obscured glass) to reduce brightness.
- Install LED lighting to save on costs and maintenance.
- Consider a lower wattage if outdoor lighting is illuminating spaces beyond your property.
- Install dimmers and timers to easily control lighting. Dim during off-peak hours when possible.
Regulations regarding outdoor lights are found in section 36 of our Community Standards Bylaw.
This page is an overview of these regulations. Please refer to the actual bylaw for more detailed information. Original copies of the bylaw are available at the City Clerk's office.
