Community Cleanup 2024

Community Cleanup events save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their waste carts or residents who do not have access to cart service. Below are the cleanup dates in Ward 6. For the full schedule and location, please visit www.calgary.ca/cleanups

Bow Trail/Sarcee Trail Functional Planning Study

After years of the Ward 6 office advocating, the City of Calgary is exploring ways to enhance safety and traffic flow at the intersection and roadways of Sarcee Trail S.W. and Bow Trail S.W. by launching a functional planning study. The Study will address short and long-term development needs in West Calgary through potential road, pathway, and intersection improvements.

Potholes

Spring is here – and potholes too.

Repairing potholes is an important part of our road maintenance, and permanent repairs can only be made during the spring/summer months when warmer weather & dry pavement allows the asphalt to set properly.

Repairs are made by our crews and identified during regular inspections and through 311 service requests made by residents.

If you notice a pothole, check our online pothole map to see if it already has a repair request, and if not, report it at calgary.ca/potholes.

Street Sweeping

Street sweeping now underway. Find out what day your street will be swept by inputting your address here calgary.ca/sweep and signing up for alerts.  

Crews will be out Monday - Friday from 8:00am until 4:00pm (except statutory holidays).

Please follow on-street signage. Any vehicle not removed during a sweeping ban is subject to ticketing and/or towing during the dates and times on posted signage. This is to ensure residential streets can be cleared of debris that has accumulated.

Iconic Calgary Artwork gets new home in Ward 6

As a daily CTrain rider I am happy to announce that transit riders will now be able to witness the blending of artistry and urban connectivity with the installation of a popular piece at the 45th Street station.

TransitStory, formerly installed at the City’s Centre-street station since 2012, showcases numerous sculptures of people fabricated from steel to form a crowd of transit travelers which appear to share a moment of time and space with the other commuters embarking and disembarking at the station.

Crafted by renowned artist Jill Anholt, TransitStory was removed from its original home to accommodate future upgrades at the Centre Street Station, and to complete much-needed conservation and maintenance efforts. The city’s bustling 45th Street station is a fitting backdrop for the beloved piece, weaving a narrative resonating with the pulse of a city in constant motion.

Free Compost Giveaway

Once again, this year the City of Calgary will have a Compost giveaway. It will be available for pickup from April 15 to June 1, 2024, by appointment only. Appointment booking commences April 9 on calgary.ca/compost. Compost pick-up will be self-serve at both the Shepard and Spyhill locations. PSA: The City encourages residents to be water-wise and use a rain barrel this spring

Calgary is currently experiencing drought conditions. Together we can make every drop count in our yards by using water wisely. Harnessing rainwater for watering your yard and garden is a simple, yet effective way to reduce your water use by acting as a backup source of water during this drought.

Why a rain barrel?

Water Conservation. Rain barrels help conserve water by capturing rainwater that would otherwise be lost to runoff. By using collected rainwater to water your yard or garden, you're doing your part to help use water wisely, which is especially crucial when we’re experiencing drought conditions. Your plants will also appreciate the soft, warm water.

Stormwater Management. By capturing rainwater before it hits the ground, rain barrels play a vital role in reducing stormwater runoff. This helps prevent soil erosion and keeps pollutants from being washed into our waterways.

Environmental Impact. Using rain barrels reduces the demand on municipal water supplies, lessening the energy required for treatment and transportation.

How can I get a rain barrel?

Rain barrels are available for pre-order through Green Calgary and cost $78+GST. You can also buy them later this spring at the following dates/locations between 10am and 2pm:

• May 4th - Dalhousie Co-Op (5505 Shaganappi Trail NW)
• May 11th – Calgary Horticultural Society (2725 33 Avenue SW)
• May 25th - Deer Valley Co-Op (1221 Canyon Meadows Dr SE)
• June 1st – The Genesis Centre (7555 Falconridge Boulevard NE)
• June 8th - West Springs Co-Op (917 85 St SW)
• June 15th - Inglewood Community Garden (2297 17 St SE)
• June 22nd - Community Natural Foods Chinook (202 61 Ave SW)

Pre-orders for rain barrels have started and can be picked up at these locations or can be delivered to you by Green Calgary for a delivery fee. Please note, pre-order sale quantities are limited.

Various types of rain barrels are also available at local hardware stores and garden centres around Calgary.

Remember, every drop counts when it comes to water conservation. By incorporating a rain barrel into your outdoor routine, you're not only benefiting your yard but also contributing to a greener, more sustainable Calgary.

Calgary Police Service: Focus Group

Calling all community members who want the opportunity to be a part of focus group sessions designed to enhance transparency, public trust and confidence in your police service. 

To meet one of the Body Worn Camera policy objectives that points to the aforementioned enhancing of transparency, public trust, and confidence, the Calgary Police Service is seeking participants who can share their experiences and perceptions of our officers relating to the use of Body Worn Cameras.  Participants may have lived experience themselves or know someone who has in their respective communities, and are willing to engage by providing us feedback. 

Three focus group sessions planned for May 2024.  Two of the sessions will be on Microsoft Teams and one will be in-person. The dates are listed below and the following link https://forms.office.com/r/thwCY6PdYE if for potential volunteers to indicate interest and their engagement preference.
