May 2025 Newsletter

newsletter banner

Hello Ward 6!

Starting June 1, in accordance with the start of the municipal election period, the Ward 6 office will be subject to restrictions on what we can publicly share. This means we will no longer be able to distribute City-funded newsletters, host open houses, or send mass emails—unless they are approved for emergency communication.

Additionally, beginning September 22 (Nomination Day), updates to City-funded websites will be paused until after the election.

As a result, this will be the final Ward 6 newsletter for this term that will be sent via email. Newsletters and city updates will continue being posted until September 22 on our website here: Latest news - Ward 6. Follow us on Facebook and X @wardsixyyc for ongoing updates for Ward 6.

While these changes are in place, the Ward 6 Office remains “open for business” for you. If you have questions or need assistance with any City service, please don’t hesitate to contact us at Ward06@calgary.ca—we’re always happy to help.

69th Street Station Parkade: evening hour access

Background

The 69th Street Station parkade has previously been the subject of many public inquiries due to evening hour vehicle stunting and noise. To address these concerns, Calgary Transit introduced security measures to deter unauthorized access and use of the parkade. To date, Calgary Transit has installed overhead doors that remain closed from the hours of 9:00 PM to 2:00 AM and only allow vehicles to exit the parkade between these hours.

Update

Calgary Transit has noticed a significant decrease in public inquiries related to the concerns noted above. As such, limiting vehicle access during the evening hours has been a success.

The next phase of this project is to implement pedestrian door closures to deter unauthorized pedestrian entry between 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Customers have been notified of this upcoming change by way of signage at the parkade entrance since early March. These security measures have been installed on each door and will be activated soon after the distribution of this memo.

Once activated, Calgary Transit customers seeking to access their vehicles between 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM will be required to use the help phone (intercom) located adjacent to the doors to request Calgary Transit to unlock the doors remotely and provide access into the parkade. Anyone wishing to park after 9:00 PM can use the at-grade parking lot on the east side of 69th Street Station which sees lower usage in the evenings.

property tax

Find out how your property tax is changing

Your property tax bill is calculated and mailed out in May each year. Three main inputs are required to determine your tax bill: The City budget, the provincial budget, and your property assessment.

With the Provincial Budget recently released, residential property owners can expect a 15.6 per cent increase in the Provincial portion of their property tax bill, while non-residential customers can expect a 10.8 per cent increase. The City’s residential increase was 5.3 per cent, and 1.3 per cent for non-residential. This year, over $1 billion in property taxes will go to the province.

For 2025, on a typical single-family home assessed at $697,000, the Provincial property tax increase is estimated at $218 annually, while for the same house, The City property tax increase is estimated at $134 annually.

Your tax change depends on the value of your property. Use our Property Tax Calculator to get the most up-to-date estimate of your property’s tax change, including the updated provincial portion.

If you’ve not received your property tax bill in the mail by May 23, contact us here Contact Assessment & Tax. If you are not on the TIPP program property tax bills are due June 30, 2025.

farm stand

Farm Stands across Calgary are coming to a neighbourhood near you this spring!

Since 2017, The City has partnered with local and regional farms to offer Calgarians more options for fresh and local food through The Farm Stand Program. This program supports 9 incredible farmers and vendors with over 30 farm stands to bring more fresh fruit, vegetables, and artisanal products to more Calgary communities. Beyond increasing accessibility for Calgarians to purchase healthy, fresh and local food, the Farm Stand Program supports local and regional growers by creating more places for them to sell their produce. When you shop at a farm stand, you get to participate in your food shopping in a new and personal way. You can ask questions about how your food was grown, get recipe ideas, get to know your farmer, connect with your neighbours and keep your dollars spent in the local economy. You also help to build a stronger local food system, which keeps us all stronger when we face various disruptions to our food systems, such as a pandemic, fuel price increases, or political instability. Launch dates for each farm stand vary throughout May-June and most of the stands run weekly for two to five hours. We encourage all Calgarians to stop by your local farm stand, grab some delicious seasonal produce, chat with a farmer and learn more about where your food comes from. To learn more about the program, or find a location near you, visit calgary.ca/localfood
