New construction contracts awarded to Graham, PCL and Supreme Steel, supporting local jobs

New construction contracts awarded to Graham, PCL and Supreme Steel, supporting local jobs 👷‍♂️

Rendering of the elevated guideway over Barlow Trail & 114 Ave S.E.

Can you believe it’s been a year since we broke ground in June 2025? Since then, the Green Line LRT - SE Project has been full speed ahead. Now, the second half of 2026 marks a major step forward, with new contracts awarded for key construction across the southeast.

Three contracts have been awarded in May and June. Two advance construction at the Maintenance and Storage Facility, including foundations and utility work along with fabrication of structural steel. The third builds the 570-metre elevated guideway over 114 Avenue and Barlow Trail S.E.

Additional contracts to be awarded in 2026 will build:

  • three bridges crossing Deerfoot Trail, the Bow River, and Ogden Road,
  • six at-grade LRT stations,
  • two elevated LRT stations, and
  • an elevated guideway from the Ramsay/Inglewood station to the 26 Avenue S.E. station at Crossroads Market.

Later this year, additional Requests for Proposals will be issued for track work and key systems like communications and traction power, which will bring the project closer to full construction.

More options to be explored for the Downtown Segment 🏢

Green Line offered drop-in sessions, virtual sessions and an online survey in February.

On June 9, the project team shared an update on the Downtown Segment to the Executive Committee of Council. We shared the results of our outreach, engagement, and research. This work was done to gather feedback from Calgarians about the Province of Alberta’s preferred elevated downtown alignment down 10 Avenue and 2 Street SW.

During engagement conducted through an online survey and in-person drop-in sessions, opposition to an elevated route downtown was commonly heard. Research showed that 65 per cent of Calgarians had some level of support for a possible elevated route downtown. But among interest holders (property or business owners along the proposed route), 83 per cent were opposed.

After hearing this update and the varying levels of support, the Committee proposed and approved a modified direction for the project. On June 30, Council approved this updated direction.

Throughout the summer the Green Line team will identify possible alternative route options for the Downtown Segment. The options will be shared with the Executive Committee on September 8, 2026.

What we're building now 🚧

Installing a girder for the LRT bridge over Blackfoot Trail on May 27, 2026

Construction is underway at several locations across southeast Calgary:

Bridges (Ogden and Blackfoot Trail)
Two major bridges are under construction at 78 Avenue S.E. in Ogden and at Blackfoot Trail near Crossroads Market. In late May, six massive girders were installed over two nights for the Blackfoot Trail bridge — an important and visible step forward for the project.

Ogden Road realignment
Crews are installing storm infrastructure and watermain systems at Ogden Road and Millican Road to allow the road to be shifted and make way for the LRT between Ogden Road and the CPKC track. A new parking lot will be built at the south end of Pop Davies Athletic Park for both transit riders and park users.

Elevated guideway (Barlow Trail & 114 Ave S.E.)
Work is underway to build a 570-metre elevated guideway (a raised track for trains) over the busy intersection of Barlow Trail and 114 Ave S.E. The guideway allows trains to travel above the traffic and keep the cars below moving. The first phase of the project began last summer when 22 piles were drilled, utilities were moved and the road was reconfigured. Final paving is almost complete, allowing construction of the actual guideway to begin in August.

Maintenance and Storage Facility (near 126 Ave S.E.)
Work has started on the facility where Green Line trains will be stored and maintained. Crews are grading the site and removing topsoil, then installing underground utilities and building foundations. Fabrication of structural steel starts later this summer, with installation beginning next year.

The first Green Line train on the assembly line.

Manufacturing of our light rail vehicles (LRVs) is underway and we’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at how Calgary’s newest trains are coming together.

These first LRVs are especially important: they’ll be used to test and fine-tune every button, function and system before the remainder of the fleet is built. Since Green Line will operate two-car trains, linking two vehicles together to ensure they work seamlessly as one unit is a critical step.
