Feeder Main area construction
Helping our community navigate construction
To protect Calgary’s drinking water system and ensure it continues to serve the city reliably into the future, we are reinforcing and replacing the Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM).
We know that construction has been disruptive and will continue to impact daily life for residents and businesses in the area. This page is here to support you by bringing together clear, up‑to‑date information about construction and related activities from Bearspaw South Feeder Main. Our goal is to help you easily find the information you need, stay informed about what’s happening nearby, and remain connected to your community throughout the project.

Community mitigation
Until the replacement pipe is in service, we cannot guarantee the feeder main will not break again. Public safety remains the top priority and we are ensuring there is a community protection plan in place. There are several mitigation measures are in place to help protect communities in the event of a feeder main failure. These include flood barrier adjustments along the Bow River, temporary pathway barriers with a ramp to maintain access, a staging area at Shouldice Athletic Park for pumps and equipment, and ongoing maintenance of catch basins.
The City continues to evaluate additional mitigation options and your safety and access to water are our top priorities. We will keep you updated and provide clear instructions if the situation changes.
Measures in place to protect our community
The community protection plan is meant to ensure that we are protecting the community in the best way possible should we have a break.
Examples of mitigation measures in place in case of a feeder main break
- Crews have cleared catch basins, opened river outflows, and replaced select manhole covers with ones that will allow water to drain more rapidly in the event of a pipe break.
- Two segments of the Bow River flood barrier along Montgomery Blvd. N.W. were removed so water can flow directly into the river.
- Temporary barriers have been installed along the Bow River pathway next to Parkdale Blvd. N.W.
- A pathway ramp is being built over the barrier at Parkdale Blvd and 32nd Street N.W. to restore access to the Bow River Pathway.
- A staging area is being set up in Shouldice Athletic Park to house pumps and equipment which can be quickly deployed if there is a release.
- During the Return to Service you will see City of Calgary crews and emergency responders in the area to ensure a rapid response in the event of a pipe break.
- We continue to monitor the feeder main for anomalies and wire breaks that may provide us with an early indication of any problems.
Community mitigation checklist
As a precaution, we are asking that all community members continue to prepare. We’ve provided a checklist to support your precautionary preparation.
