Using your black cart

Your black cart is a safer, cleaner and more efficient way to take out the trash. Use the cart for things that you normally put in a bag or can (including yard waste).

What time does the City pick up garbage?

Set out your cart by 7 a.m. on your collection day and no earlier than 7 p.m. the evening before, and properly place your cart.

What can go in the garbage?

You can also search What Goes Where for a complete list of disposal and recycling options.

Will you collect extra bags?

Always fill your cart first before putting out any additional garbage bags.

Your black cart can hold three to four standard-sized garbage bags (66 cm x 91 cm). If your black cart is full, excess bags can be set one foot away from your cart for collection. There is no fee for extra bags at this time.

A tag-a-bag program for excess garbage has been approved by City Council which will require buying tags to put on extra garbage bags for pick up.

More details about the program will be shared before it begins in mid-2020. If you are aware of illegal dumping, please contact 311 to report the issue.

We recommend you use standard-sized garbage bags that are strong enough to hold the contents and weigh less than 20 kilograms (45 pounds) each when filled. If you can easily lift the bag with one hand, it should be okay.

During the spring, fall and other high volume garbage periods, we will collect waste in black carts but may limit the number of extra garbage bags that are picked up to ensure everyone gets service. If we are unable to collect your extra bags, store them on your property until your next collection day.

Do I need to bag my garbage?

Make sure your garbage is not packed in too tightly or it will not fall out of the cart during pickup.

You can choose to bag your garbage before placing it in the cart, with these exceptions:

Sharp objects
Wrap and place in puncture-proof containers.

Powders, dust and animal waste
Double-bag the bags and tie them.

Street sweepings
Put gravel, dust, rocks and other debris into a garbage bag. Double-bag and make sure it is under the 20kg (45 pound) weight limit.

Grass clippings and yard waste
Grass clippings and yard waste must be put in the green cart or in paper yard waste bags. Yard waste set out in plastic bags will not be collected.
